The Truth About Indoor Air Quality: 7 Common Myths Debunked

Most people know that the air quality inside your home can significantly impact your family’s health, safety, and comfort. But if you’re trying to improve your home’s indoor air quality (IAQ), you should be aware of these seven common myths.
Myth 1: Indoor air is always cleaner than outdoor air.
Many assume that the air inside their homes is cleaner than outside, especially within busy, urban areas. However, research shows indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air because of the following factors:
Particulate Matter—including Pet dander, mold spores, and other particles
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)— released from cleaning supplies, furniture, and building materials
Fuel Combustion—from cooking, heating, and other activities that release gases and particles inside the home
Poor Ventilation—which traps pollutants indoors, increasing their concentration
Myth 2: Air fresheners improve air quality.
While air fresheners may mask unpleasant odors, they don’t do anything to improve the quality of the air you breathe. In fact, many air fresheners release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and chemicals that can worsen indoor air quality and trigger respiratory issues.
Myth 3: Houseplants will effectively purify your air.
While houseplants can absorb certain pollutants and produce oxygen, they are not a suitable replacement for dedicated air purifiers or proper ventilation. According to a Drexel University Study, you’d likely need hundreds of plants to significantly impact indoor air quality.
Myth 4: “Green” cleaning products are always safe.
Many people turn to “green” or “natural” cleaning products, thinking they are pollutant-free. While they may contain fewer harsh chemicals, many still emit VOCs and other irritants that can affect indoor air quality. When purchasing “green” cleaning products, check the ingredients and look for certifications like the EPA’s Safer Choice label to ensure you are making a safer choice.
Myth 5: Mold only grows in humid climates.
Mold doesn’t need a humid climate to grow—it just needs moisture. Leaky pipes, roof damage, damp basements, and even poor bathroom ventilation can create the perfect environment for mold. And once mold starts growing, it can release spores into the air, triggering allergies and respiratory problems. Moisture control and timely repairs are key to mold prevention.
Myth 6: Your HVAC Filter Works Without Maintenance
Your HVAC system’s air filter is vital in capturing airborne particles, but only if it is regularly replaced or cleaned. When your filter is dirty, it can recirculate dust and allergens back into your home—ew! To keep the air inside your home clean, replace your HVAC filters as recommended. (Usually every six to twelve months—unless you have pets; then you may wish to change them more often).
Myth 7: Air Purifiers Eliminate All Indoor Air Pollutants
Air purifiers are great tools for improving air quality and removing allergens, especially dust and pollen. But no purifier can remove all pollutants. Many VOCs, odors, and biological contaminants require additional strategies such as ventilation, source control, and regular HVAC maintenance. While a whole-house air purifier can be a wise investment, it should be part of a broader IAQ strategy.
