Thawing Frozen Pipes: Service and Repair

Don’t Let Those Frozen Pipes Burst!

Thawing frozen pipes in your Massachusetts or southern New Hampshire home can be a delicate, time-consuming process. First there is the matter of figuring out exactly where the pipe is frozen, and then comes the task of thawing in a safe manner. Being prepared and informed may help you avoid the messy and often expensive issue of frozen pipes.

Water expands as it freezes. This expansion puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the pipes containing it. Most frequently, pipes that freeze are those that are exposed to bitter cold, such as outdoor hose connections, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or under kitchen cabinets.

Frozen Pipe Prevention

During extreme cold, the following measures may help prevent frozen water pipes:

  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines located in the garage

  • Don’t turn the temperature down at night.  Maintain a constant heating temperature during the day and night to help prevent the water from freezing

  • Open lower kitchen cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing under the sink

  • Make sure the water to outside faucets is turned off

  • Run a trickle of water from the kitchen and bathroom  faucets to help prevent the water from freezing
